Cedartown is a town in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Cedartown was founded by General James Shields in 1792 as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River. The post became an important Confederate Supply Depot during the American Civil War and also served as a depot for wagon trains used by General Sherman's forces during his march through Georgia and Alabama in 1864. The present-day Cedartown was established in 1876 when a group of farmers led by Major J.B. "Doc" Witherspoon bought land from John Hartsfield at what is now FM 727 and Elm Street. They named their new community after General Shields' old trading post on the Chattahoochee River where they had first settled in 1792 following the Treaty of Paris ending the French and Indian War. In 1918, Cedartown was moved from its original location east of downtown to its current location west of downtown when it became part of Cobb County. In 1925, local businessmen erected a large brick building which still stands today as the headquarters for Cadet Ammunition Company (later known as Alliant Ammo). This company manufactured ammunition including artillery rounds, machine guns and sniper rounds until it merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1964 to form Winchester Incorporated (now National Rifle Association). At that time, Cadet Ammunition ceased production and all inventory were sold to Alliant Ammo which continued to produce ammunition commercially until 1990 when it too merged with Remington Arms Company to form Remington Products Corporation (now ATK). During World War II, Cedartown played an important role supplying munitions for both Allied forces and Axis combatants alike; producing shells for surface ships such as battleships and aircraft carriers as well as ballistics data for tank/ antitank guns and other ordnance platforms across Europe while also manufacturing anti-aircraft rounds Used throughout North Africa during Operation Torch landing By October 1942 all major munitions plants were operational... production shifted from Canton Plant into new Beaumont Factory near Oxford, Alabama due to war shortages... Ordnance production increased rapidly thru 1945 due to military requirements resulting in plant closings at Grand Rapids Arsenal & Hudson Arsenal... Postwar era saw steady growth with many new factories built including Oneonta Factory which produced artillery projectiles until 1978

In recent years, development of new housing estates has revived some aspects of the town's historic architecture while also leading to increased traffic congestion around Cedartown Main Street which hinders access for residents and business owners alike.
