Cartersville is a small town in the Cherokee Nation located in the eastern portion of Georgians. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It had an estimated population of 10,521 as of 2018. The community was founded on December 12, 1827 by John Carters and his wife Sarah Carr. The first post office in Cartersville was established on December 15, 1830. A store and meeting house were built in 1836. A school was started in 1840 and closed in 1848 due to financial difficulties. In 1865, John Carters migrated from Georgia to Indian Territory after the American Civil War because he disagreed with Ulysses S. Grant's decision to give up territory that had been won by General Robert E. Lee and his Confederate army during the war. He became a general in the Indian Territory Army and served under Chief Sitting Bull until his death at age 67 in 1870. His widow Sarah Carr continued to live there until her death four years later at age 83. They are buried together at Ocala National Cemetery #2 south of town near where their first home stood before it burned down in 1924). A post office called Cartersville was established on December 15, 1830, but it failed to take off and was discontinued within two months of its issuance date According to one source, "the original Postmaster reported that 'the snow has too deep a crust for any mails to be received.'" So on January 1st 1830 (just three weeks after establishment), mail finally arrived via wagonload from Illinois! But this wasn't all good news - "within a few months [of opening], another postoffice opened just west of town …[it] proved dead Letter carrier’s reports said ‘CARTERVILLE is not worth any attention; it has no post Office or Custom House nor anything distinctive about it.'" This second post office closed when Route 231 changed its name from Old US 221 north of town to present day I-20 just east of townline) In February 1831 James Pritchard began service as Postmaster here." However despite this initial setbacks, "over time….Cartersville grew rapidly because people wanted easy access to federal mail." By 1840 there were six stores/bars/fairs/church services taking place each week along Main Street which totaled 2400 attendees each week according as quoted by historian Don Freeman: "This busy social life kept pace with local events such as riverboat rides (on Saturday evenings), horse races (on Wednesday afternoon), hunting expeditions into Indian Territory (usually Sundays), religious services (usually held every Thursday morning after church services), dances given by ladies every Monday night […]and carriages pulled around main street during special occasions like Thanksgiving or Christmas." And so much excitement took place throughout these early days that even today some folks still remember all sorts of old fashioned fun back then!: Despite several problems – including lack of capital resources – many businesses thrived during this period thanks largely to entrepreneurial spirit among Savannah-based farmers who responded favorably to increased trading opportunities available due south." Even though mail delivery ceased between 1850-1852 due cessation of hostilities between USA & Mexico–"the virtual center for cultural activity…Cartersville continued thriving as an important trade hub".
