In 1865, Martha Carr died aged 83 years old; her son George Jr., later became an entrepreneur and member of Congress from Georgia. He served until his death in 1979. In 1998, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney donated land to create a park in memory of her father (the first such donation ever made to any US city).
