In 1886, Captain John A. Cartersville founded the first rifle shooting camp in Georgia, located on what is now the University of Georgia campus. The first annual NRA Annual Meeting was held at this site in 1903. Today, the NRA sponsors a range on the University of Georgia campus that hosts over 100 firearm events annually. The school has also been home to many world-renowned firearms experts who have taught and lectured at GSU’s School of Firearms Science and Technology since 1978. Since its inception, Cartersville Rifle Shooting Club has been responsible for developing and maintaining one of the most comprehensive rifle shooting programs in the Southeast. This weeklong program features NRA members from all overGeorgia; staff members from club headquarters; exhibitors from throughout Cobb County; students from GSU’s School of Firearms Science and Technology; as well as world-renowned firearms experts such as Bob Kappler and Jay Nordlinger. In addition to offering an excellent opportunity for shooters of all levels to experience some top-tier competition, this year’s event will include several clinics designed specifically for beginner shooters by NRA Instructor/Instructor emeritus Don Freeman.

The Cartersville Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1881. The club held its first meeting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Aiken. The first shooting session took place on September 14, 1881, at which time the club consisted of five members. In 1886, the club moved to the old Post Office building on Elm Street, where it continued to meet until 1934. In that year, the club became a member of the Georgia Rifle and Pistol Association (GRPA).
Cartersville is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Fulton County government. Cartersville lies on the east bank of the Chattahoochee River and is bordered to the north by Decatur and to the south by Griffin. The name "Cartersville" comes from Benjamin Banneker, who came to this area in 1802 as part of a party led by Hugh Jones. Banneker named his community for General James HarnettCarter, who had served in the American Revolution and then been elected governor of Georgia in 1796. In 1813, Colonel Thomas Handy organized a military expedition against Creek Indians near present-day Carrollton; he named his town after Carter's unit. In 1821, Captain John Garratt founded what is now Cartersville on land that he had acquired from Samuel Thomson during the Creek War of 1812. Garratt moved his family to Cartersville in 1830 from their original farmstead at Mount Carmel on Carlton Hill near here. In those early days there were only about 20 people living hereabouts; most of them were farmers or traders who traded with Creeks and others along the Chattahoochee River for goods and provisions. By 1840 many families had arrived here from surrounding counties:ranier (now Roswell), Greenlaw (now Perkinston), Covington (now Walker), Hawkins (later renamed Cartersburg), Eufaula (later renamed Auburn) – all built up around churches, schools and other public buildings which testify to how much Atlanta had changed since 1800 when it was just an Indian village composed mainly of huts occupied by hunter-gatherers seeking food This pretty little town grew very rapidly due to its strategic location as well as its good soil quality which made farming possible despite occasional flooding caused by high water levels caused by ice flows across the river."

It is part of the Cartersville-Macon-Roswell Metropolitan Statistical Area. The early history of Cartersville is unknown, but it likely dates back to the 17th century when English traders and missionaries arrived in this area. One of the first permanent settlements in what is now Cartersville was built by Captain John Smith in 1714. By 1800, Cartersville had a population of over 2,000 people. In 1802, General Andrew Jackson moved his army from Chattanooga to take control of the river valley and defeat General Creek's forces at Battle of Horseshoe Bend. While there, he camped near present-day Cartersville and observed some Indian activity for which he took immediate action. He ordered Colonel James Wilkinson to build him a house near where Fort Moultrie now stands as a memorial to that event. This act won Jackson popular support among local farmers and helped lay the foundation for future American military successes against Native Americans. During Reconstruction (1865-1913), Cartersville became an important center for African American education and social services in eastern Georgia during Reconstruction period times. Many white businessmen closed their businesses during this time because they could not compete with black entrepreneurs who were able to provide these services freely without government assistance or regulation
