Cartersville is a town in Butternut County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Athens-Clarke Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Cartersville was James Carr and his family who arrived there in 1814. The town site was chosen because of its strategic location on the northeast corner of two ridges running parallel to each other about three miles wide and six miles long. This area contains some of the oldest mines in the state and has been called "the bread basket of Georgia." The town began as a small log cabin community near present day Hawkinsville. In 1838, Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest led a military expedition against the Creeks in what is now Butternut County and decided to establish a post here to protect Creek settlers from their Indian attackers. He named the post Fort Nashborough after Vice President Andrew Johnson's father-in-law, General James Nashborough (1787–1858). When Fort Nashborough became known as Cartersville, local farmers gathered logs and started buildings around it. By 1840, Cartersville had an Presbyterian church and five stores. A school was built that year also by local farmers. In 1845, Confederate General Robert Ewell established himself at nearby Mount Juliet with his headquarters south of Athens when he withdrew from Atlanta following orders from General Ulysses S Grant to prevent any civilian casualties during Operation Market Garden across the Chattahoochee River into Alabama or Savannah - an attempt by Confederate officers to gain control over those areas west of Mobile Bay without facing Union forces on land In 1846 John Troup wagon train stopped at Cartersville for supplies en route to Tennessee; many members died along way duemostly due to disease contracted while traveling through hostile territory In 1850 Isaac Newton Brown opened a general store with his brother John in what is now downtown Cartersville However, this would be only one stop on Browns' business travels as he soon enlarged and improved his store several times before moving it westward along Railroad Street north into downtown Athens where it remains today
