In 1835, John A. Carter and his brother James founded the Georgia Iron Works in Cartersville, Georgia. The company produced cannons, rifles, pistols, cavalry equipment and other munitions. In 1861, the Confederate States of America was formed and many of the Cartersville businesses became part of the new nation. After the war ended in 1865, most of the businesses were sold to a group led by Andrew Johnson. In 1876-1877, John A. Carter erected a large factory complex that remains standing today at 515 Broad Street in Cartersville. This complex included a foundry where cannonballs were made from wrought iron; an armory with 20 guns; a machine shop; and four barracks for storage and use by its employees.Carter's products continued to be popular well into the 20th century and are still being used today. Today there are several hundred active corporations utilizing Carter's products worldwide."
