Cartersville is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first European to visit Cartersville was Captain John Smith in 1733. He named it "Cartersville" after his brother-in-law, GeorgeCarter, who came overland fromAmerica with a group of English Settlers in 1735. In 1802, General James Kenedy and his army invaded Alabama and captured Mobile before reaching Cartersville. From here he wrote Governor Alexander Macon:"I have passed through this place on my way to Mobile as we supposed that our enemies lay siege to that place; but we soon found that they had withdrawn their attention to take possession of Mobile." In 1815 Nathan Bedford Forrest led an expedition against the Creek Nation near Opelousas and destroyed their village of Nacogdoches while retreating back across the Tennessee River. A Presbyterian Church was built in honor of this event in 1816 by Reverend John Pemberton Moore which still stands today on New Market Street just east of Interstate 20 Exit 109B (the Old Courthouse Road). In 1865 Confederate General Jubal Early's army movement along Interstate 10 bypassed Cartersville when he reached Kennesaw Junction south of Marietta. Eugene Debs campaign headline "Cartersvillians for Debs" appeared on carterstownpostcard from early spring 1916 Thereafter only sporadic mail received until fall 1918 when all communication stopped due to World War I restrictions on mail transportation into Georgia

Cartersville is a small town in south Georgia, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. The name comes from James Carter, who settled there in 1824. It is now part of Dalton County. The townsite was first patented by explorer James Carter on December 5, 1824. He and his family had been exploring the area since 1819 when they discovered salt water springs near what would become Daltonville. They named their new location "Cartersville" after themselves and their son John Carr (1792-1868). In 1830, two sisters named Sarah and Anna built a log cabin on the site which served as the nucleus for the town that developed around it over the next decade. In 1836, Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest moved his cavalry unit from Savannah to attack General Robert Ewell's army at Battle of Gaines Mill in north Georgia. Forrest's troopers were routed and many of their horses were killed or captured; this event became known as "the saddest day in American history". The battle led to friendly competition between General Ewell's forces and Cartersvilleians over control of Route 66 which passed through eastern Dalton County on its way to Chattanooga. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to cotton cultivation and transportation links with nearby Atlanta via wagon roads and riversboat navigation. By 1890, most of Cartersville had been annexed by Dalton County; however, a few residential areas still remain today within the limits of downtown Daltonville proper. There has never been an official census conducted in CartersVILLE because its population numbers only reflect residents who reported residing within its boundaries at any given date - making it one of America's smallest towns by population size
Cartersville was founded by George Washington in 1786. It was named for General James Carters, who had fought in the American Revolution. The town developed around a Presbyterian church and school. In 1801, the nucleus of what would become Carter'sville was laid out when a group of settlers led by Captain John Swanton moved to the area from adjacent Lumpkin County. By 1811,Carter'sville had an population of about 25 people. In 1818, Carter'sville became the county seat of Cobb County after it was removed from Lumpkin County. The courthouse and jail were built here and remain standing today. In 1824, Governor Andrew Jackson appointed Judge Isaac Neely as justice of the peace for Cobb County. Neely played an important role in developing Carter'sville into a thriving town center that retains its historic buildings and architecture today.
