Cartersville is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 5,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Cartersville is located on the cash-and-carry route between Atlanta and Chattanooga. The first settler in Cartersville was John Carter, who arrived in 1786. The town was platted in 1814 by James Gadsden as a place to Which he could sell goods to those who lived near Chattanooga. The name changed several times over the years before settling on "Carter" in 1828 according to one source. Captain Elisha Beale founded Beale Ferry Landing here when he took possession of what is now Banks Peninsula from the Cherokee nation following their Removal from East Tennessee in 1800. By 1830, cotton plantations had reached Cartersville and many shops and businesses opened up around these plantations including warehouses for storing goods acquired from delivery by wagonloads of slaves brought overland from Africa or hauled down by teams of oxen across country roadsides each day during transportation season (the so-called "carriage trade"). During World War II much of the town was destroyed when bombing raids hit it while it lay under Japanese occupation; however most of it has since been rebuilt thanks to federal dollars pumped into infrastructure projects throughout Fulton County which include new expressways/highways and bridges/tunnels linking different parts of our county together like never before.
