Cartersville is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1822 by General James A. Carters and his wife Catharine Beale Carr. The original three-story wooden frame house still stands today on the corner of Second and Fifth streets, overlooking the Chattahoochee River. In 1847, General James A. Carters' son-in-law Colonel John Milledge built a larger brick home on this site which served as the town's first post office from 1847 to 1850. With its growth, the town began to develop new businesses such as a gristmill, woolen mill and sawmill; also, one cotton gin was erected in 1861. In 1860, citizens of Columbusopolis petitioned for incorporation of their village adjacent to Cartersville; but due to lack of support from some residents who felt that their land would be better used for agricultural purposes rather than becoming an incorporated community (Cartersville became known as "Columbusopolis"), Columbusopolis never received official recognition until after Cartersville had already ceased operations in 1910. The name "Cartersville" comes from General James A. Carters' visit here in 1822 when he established himself and his family at what is now Third Street and First Avenue NW in present day Carrboro Township before moving eastward into Butler County to take up arms against Native Americans known as the Creek Nation during the Seminole Wars (1824–1836). After winning battle after battle against these fierce people - thought by many including GeneralJamesACarters himself to be supernatural - he decided that this place should be named "Cartersville" in honor of him and his actions thereabouts...the spelling being correct at that time according to early settlers/gazetteers or perhaps because it was easier to remember than some other localities they had visited while travelling through this area." The first stores opened here were a gristmill run by Jonathan Mills & Company which grinded corn for local farmers and sold bread products such as flour, sugar and molasses; also a woolen mill operated by William Henson & Sons which produced yarn for clothing manufacturing companies across America; also one cotton gin located on Third Street NW served various needs such as ground coffee beans into flour for baking goods until 1921 when it finally stopped production due largely to high competition from more modern mills located elsewhere within Fulton County." 2) In 1830 general James A hardy Carr purchased 640 acres north of Carrboro Township along with 400 acres adjoining it creating what is now Cobb County 3) On October 15th 1840 Georgia Constituted 2 counties named after general carter including Garrard Coolyer county west of cartertown Garrard county east of cartertown 3rd party state act no 985 Geo CA
