On October 6, 1831, William Pritchard offered five acres (2 km²) of land northeast of downtown for the erection of a market house and post office which were soon opened by Jno Aulds as "The Post Office." In 1837–38 Carter Mayhew built an adobe parsonage north of downtown which served as the nucleus for what is now known as First Baptist Church (now Baptist Trustees Home). Mayhew also laid out streetscape including two blocks long Front Street between Depot Square and Capitol Avenue. In 1840 John Fenton donated one acre (0.40 km²) south of downtown for school purposes; this lot fronts Courthouse Square today. After Fenton's donation many homes were built on this square block including Driggs Female Academy (1846), Christmastime House (1848), Third Presbyterian Church (1849), Post Office House (1851), Masonic Temple & Hotel (1855), Episcopal Chapel & School Building(1857), First Methodist Church & Hospital(1859) and Second Presbyterian Church( 1863 ). In 1865 Isaac Sibley erected a frame building at 404 Eickhoff Road which served as hospital until 1898 when it burned down; this building still stands today as Sibley's Bakery located across from First Baptist Church on Courthouse Square ().
