Cartersville, GA is a small town in Macon County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. It has a history dating back to 1822 when the area was part of the Cherokee Nation. Cartersville is located on State Route 321 and is close to the University of Georgia and the Atlanta metropolitan area. The original settler in what became Cartersville was John Aiken who arrived in 1822. Aiken had married a woman from an early Cherokee settlement oncnofllow Point Road some 20 miles (32 km) east of Cartersville. In 1830, Aiken's brother-in-law James Goodloe moved from his home near Americus to become one of two white men permanently associated with Cartersville as postmaster and storekeeper. By 1835, Goodloe had built a log cabin on what is now State Route 321 which he named "Goodloe House." He also acquired lots along creek which ran through the community until it was diverted by engineers in 1916 for use as a golf course In 1837–38, Isaiah Crawford settled near present day Huffman Drive and constructed his first three houses here. Crawford Store occupied what is now Huffman Drive for about ten years before being replaced by Wm Hickey's Store in 1840/41; both stores were operated out of badlands west of present day College Street between Griffin Avenue and Lauderdale Road (now known as Thompson Boulevard). In 1848–49 Andrew Johnson erected his first cotton gin at present day Randolph Avenue and Creek Roads just south of Huffman Drive; this early cotton gin continued operation until 1850 when it burned down due to overloading In 1865–66 James Fenton processed cash crops for local farmers using an old water wheel situated northeast corner lot at current day High School Road/SR 322 where he raised chickens until 1870 when construction began on new factory buildings including equipment storage barns (later used as classrooms), carpenter shop building (renamed engine shop), blacksmithshop building (later used as garage) and other associated structures The facility produced more than 1 million pounds (454 metric tons) of cotton annually during its heyday After Fenton's death in 1870 his son-in-law Benjamin Logan took over operations but within two years Logan had invested all assets except land into a stock company that failed within six months After another unsuccessful attempt to revive the company he sold it outright to Jno Pemberton who operated it successfully for 31 years until its closure in 1984 . Today, Cartersville is one of the most impoverished cities in Georgia with an average income of $13,787 per year.
