The gun lamp consisted of a small acetylene gas cylinder filled with kerosene or oil, attached to a short standard barrel. When the gun was fired, the acetylene created a bright light that could be seen up close at any range. The gun lamp was later replaced by the more common muzzleloader light in 1865
Cartersville is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,173 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The Cartersville post office opened on November 25, 1814 and closed on March 14, 1913. The town began as a ferry landing on the Chattahoochee River. The first settler in Cartersville was John Hartsfield, who arrived in 1819 with his family from England. He named the landing "Hartsfield Ferry" after himself and his father-in-law, Colonel James Hartsfield of Georgia fame (1792-1868). In 1830 John Hartsfield Jr., moved to what is now Cartersville from Milledgeville and founded a flour mill there which remains operational to this day. In 1835 Isaac Morse established a sawmill in what is now the downtown business district of Cartersville; it operated until 1840 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1838 Gideon McCoy settled near what is now University Park in central Cartersville; he later served as Mayor of Cartersville and died there in 1886. In 1840 George Washington Dixon organized a wagon road that ran through present-day CartersVILLE from Marietta to Athens; it became known as "Dixon's Trace".
