In 1810, General Andrew Johnson conducted a survey for a road through present day Cartersville which led directly to Atlanta. When construction began on this road in 1811 it was called Indian Gap Road because it crossed a gully near present day Five Forks Creek Dam which caused great inconvenience to settlers living along its route. The name changed to Highway 19 when construction resumed in 1932 following completion of Interstate 85 between Atlanta and Chattanooga In 1840, General Nathan Bedford Forrest purchased 10 square miles east side of current day downtown Cartersville for $5 per acre from Alexander Swann Moore who had also purchased land adjacent to Five Forks Creek Dam from the Cherokees less than two years earlier . By 1850 there were over 100 homes/cities established throughout eastern Fulton County as cotton plantations grew larger and more residents moved into towns seeking access to markets for their crops and services such as roads, schools and churches

The first store in downtown Cartersville was built by Capt. John and his son William on Chestnut Street near where thepresent-day courthouse stands today. In 1907, whenAtlantabecamethenewmetropolisofthe United States,CaptainJohnCarters decided to move his family to Atlanta so that he could be closer to friends and family back home in England which he had not seen since he left for America over two years earlier! He sold all of their belongings including their farm land around Marietta Creek to finance this move and named his new home "Cartersville" after himself and his father-in-law, James Coker (1798-1864). After living there just six months, Capts John's young son died suddenly of consumption while playing outside; Captain Johns grief led him to retire from business altogether within 2 years of moving into "Cartersville". Despite its short stay as an American city, "Cartersville" managed to remain quite active during its time as a community - hosting various events such as dances/fairs/ carnivals etc., which drew people from throughout central Georgia together for one period or another until later subdivisions replaced it completely with suburban tracts without any connection whatsoever between them – effectively erasing any vestige of local history or identity unique unto itself!
