Cartersville, Georgia is a small town in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The Cartersville School District serves the town and its constituent schools. There are also two churches in Cartersville: First Baptist Church and Episcopal Church of the Nazarene. The first white settlers to Cartersville were Seth Carr and James Fenton. In 1802, John Stillwell moved from his home near Marietta to start a farm on what is now Fourth Street in present-day Cartersville. He named it "Stillwell's Station." The land around Stillwell's Station was sold off until 1818 when Isaac Asbury purchased it and began to grow cotton plantation here. Asbury became one of the largest landowners in Cobb County and developed this tract into what is now known as Cartersville. In 1824, Captain Nathan Bedford bought 640 acres (2 km²) of land east of present-day Second Street in what is now northeast corner of Third Avenue and Elizabeth Street for $1,000 cash plus 5% interest on each $100 paid back over 10 years. This tract became known as Bedford Fields after Captain Bedford's purchase. The first house on this block was built by Colonel William Cranch in 1830-31 following his purchase of some adjoining land from Asbury for $500 cash plus 2% interest per year on all money paid back over 10 years or 12 months). Colonel Cranch donated the building that stands today on Third Avenue between Elizabeth and Second Streets (now known as North Main Street) to Presbyterian Churches which used it as their meeting hall from 1834 until 1938 when they sold it to Mr. Ladd who then tore down the old hall brick by brick and replaced it with a new structure measuring .80 x .92 m (3/4 x .40 y), designed by architect Jules Eiffel about 1895 which still stands today (see photo). It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1986.) Cartersville is a small town located in Clarke County, Georgia, about 25 miles southwest of Atlanta. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Cartersville was James A. Carter who arrived in 1802. He built a cabin on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. Cartersville began as a trading post and station on the Savannah and Western Railway. The town's first school was opened in 1839 by Dr. Benjamin Banneker and his wife, Sally Banneker. In 1865, Cartersville became an incorporated village after it was granted land by Governor John Cokerappa Armstrong for that purpose. In 1904, George WASHINGTON was born in Cartersville to Foreman Washington and Sarah (Crawford) Washington. George graduated from high school in 1903 and attended Emory University where he obtained his Baccalaureate degree in 1905 with honors under Professor Abram Hewitt Jr.. Upon graduation, he worked as an assistant editor of the student paper at Emory until 1910 when he joined the United States Army during World War I as an Infantryman with Company B 5th Infantry Regiment stationed at Camp Butler near Chattanooga, Tennessee On July 13th 1918 while fighting near St Mihiel Ridge eastern France he lost both legs below knee amputee status due to heavy shelling which resulted from intense artillery fire caused by German tanks that had just come across our lines After being discharged from army service he returned home to married his college sweetheart Gertrude Maynard who preceded him to death on October 5th 1944 while they were honeymooning aboard their yacht off Key West Florida together
