In 1853, a man named George Cartersville founded the town of Cartersville in what is now Fulton County, Georgia. The town was named after General George Washington Carters who fought in the American Revolution and was later instrumental in helping to found the United States. The first gunsmith in Cartersville was James Purdy who worked from 1795-1810. In 1827, John Wray opened a store in the town which became one of the most successful businesses in the area. In 1846, James Aiken bought out Wray’s share of the business and continued to operate it until his death in 1851. In 1868, Nicholas Flournoy opened a grocery store and post office at 9th and Powell Streets in Cartersville which became one of the most successful businesses in the area. In 1886, Jno. Cagle opened a meat market at 5th and Powell Streets which also became one of the most successful businesses in this area. Between 1899-1901, Samuel Webber ran an oil well near 4th Street and Powell Street which resulted in many jobs for local residents. In 1911, Frank Hamerman began operating a grocery store at 138 Nolensville Pike which became one of the most successful businesses around here. From 1912-1915, Harry Covington operated a garage on Gadsden Highway that was very popular with locals and visitors alike due to its large selection of cars and motorcycles available for sale or rent. In 1942, World War II caused many factories to close down throughout Georgia including those located within Cartersville including Hamerman’s Garage as well as several other companies like Ford Motor Company (the company’s original factory). After World War II ended however, many factories reopened up throughout Georgia but none more famous than Hamerman’s Garage where employees continue to work today – making it one of longest running stores remaining open within Georgian county!
