Cartersville is a town in Dekalb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Dekalb County. The first settler in Cartersville was John Witherspoon. He built a cabin on the east side of present-day US Route 471 in 1792. A post office called Cartersville was established in 1803, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The original town site lay on what is now US Route 623 north of present-day downtown Cartersville. The town was named for General George Rogers Clark's army which fought against the Creek Nation during the American Revolution and later served as a base of operations forJoseph Aiken during the War Between the States. The town became part of DeKalb County when it was created from parts of Fulton and Dekalb Counties on July 1, 1839. In 1860, Elijah Porter bought 120 acres (49 ha) northeast of Cartersville along what is now US 471 to build a cotton gin and plantations there; Porter renamed his enterprise "Eliot Cotton plantation". After Porter's death enroute to add another acreage to his plantation after being granted an injunction by a federal court prohibiting such speculation within Georgia's boundaries, negotiations among heirs resulted in the sale by auction to Domingo Sanchez for $750/acre (3 km²). Many people living in and around Cartersville sided with the Confederacy and many businesses remained closed following the war. After the war ended, many people returned to live in or near Cartersville as it grew back into a busy community trading with surrounding counties for goods and services from farmers and merchants alike.
