The Cartersville Rifle Club was founded in 1892 and has been around ever since. In 1898, they became the first gun club to be chartered in a new state in America. The rifle club’s first members were all farmers and their only purpose was to shoot rabbits for fun. However, over time they realized that this hobby could potentially lead to more serious goals such as protecting themselves from Indians or bandits on their property. The rifle club soon began hosting shoots at various locations throughout the state of Georgia which helped promote handgun ownership and hunting amongst Georgians. In 1903, the rifle club hosted its third Annual Meeting which served as a reminder of their origins and successes. By 1907, they had outgrown their original facility and moved into what is now known as the James W. Cartersville Shooting Complex which still stands today! Other early settlers included Daniel Boone (1819), John Pemberton (1826), Jesse Benton (1828), James Cobb (1829) and Samuel Hardin ( 1830). In 1840, General Andrew Jackson ordered General Nathan Bedford Forrest to attack Mobile Bayou because he felt that slavery should be abolished throughout the United States. Forrest attacked Mobile without orders from Jackson and many were killed or captured including Colonel Thomas Hinds who led the attempt to rescue the retreating Union army units. Forrest had been appointed general of cavalry by President Franklin D. Roosevelt following his victory in World War I and believed that he could take control of Mobile Bayou if necessary so he ordered his men into open battle which resulted in more than 200 deaths with only 20 soldiers remaining when news reached Atlanta that reinforcements were on their way; Hood's Confederate army surrendered two days later at Appomattox Court House near Petersburg Alabama without any resistance from Fort Sumter within striking distance of Richmond Virginia! This event helpedlorence Georgia's nickname as 'The Confederacy's Lee County'. On November 3rd 1861 citizens of Cartersville voted not to secede from Alabama due to concerns about possible war indemnity payments from secessionists in South Carolina & Mississippi should such a decision be made by state authorities during the Civil War; however this measure failed ratification within 2 weeks due to lack of signatures from all 33 residents! In 1865 Captain Ulysses S Grant traveled through Macon County on his way southward during The Army Of Tennessee Campaign when he discovered what would become known as 'The Battle Of Chickamauga' near present day Dalton GA where over 500 privates under Lieutenant Colonel George H Johnson lost their lives fighting against 6500 Confederate troops under Major General Robert E Smith
