In 1907 Cartersville incorporation took place when all but seven residents voted to join as an organized municipality with same powers as Athens Municipal Corporation at that time under then Mayor Waddy Sharpsteen Sr.. In 1927 Old Main Street was paved over with asphalt after being used as a common walkway between Athens Municipal Hall where meetings were held and various other municipal buildings until those buildings were demolished in 2009 following damage caused by Hurricane Ivan . In 1831, Colonel George Washington Mathews donated five acres (2 ha) to the town for public use which became known as Matthews' Field or "Mathews'.". After years of growth and development, Cartersville had its own school system formed in1856 with Wm Hargrave teaching Kindergarten through 8th grade until his death in 1865; then Drury took over until 1893 when he retired due to ill health; Mrs Aiken took charge for two terms before Fannie Epps assumed office during World War I; then Mrs Gertrude Potts served until her retirement in 1969; finally Mrs Lillie Kapp joined forces with her husband Hoyt Kapp to form the present day City Council which meets monthly except during winter when meetings are held at an alternate location within city limits). During prohibition era (1920-1933), Cartersville had one grocery store that sold alcoholic drinks but no beer or wine because it was illegal under state law to sell alcohol without a license After 1933, alcohol sales resumed under special permit program allowance only for churches/temple functions etc., still not open to non-residents Today, Cartersville remains an agricultural community with apples being its primary crop while also producing hay and other livestock products including calves
