Carrollton, Georgia is a small town located in Cobb County, Georgia. The population was 5,822 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area and has an economy that relies on tourism and agriculture. The name Carrollton comes from General James Carroll's 1828 reconnaissance of the area. The first people to live in what is now Carrollton were Cherokee Indians who had been pushed out of their former home by white settlers. In 1795, General James Carroll laid out a route for a road between Athens and Chattanooga. He named it for his brother-in-law, Colonel John Carroll (1748-1827). The first house in what is now Carrollton was built on Market Street in 1807 by Nathaniel Pope. In 1830, cotton farmers started moving into the area and began to build homes around milepost 3 on Ulysses S. Grant's proposed railroad route from Athens to Marietta. By 1840, there were over 100 homeowners in what is now Carrollton. A post office called Carroltown was established in 1837, but failed to take off because no one wanted to go to such a remote location! In 1840, Jno Fenton opened Carroltown House as the first mercantile store in what is now Carrollton with goods sourced from local farmers and merchants. On November 15th of that year, Andrew Johnson became President of the United States after being elected as part of the American Revolution against George Washington's government coalition led by Thomas Jefferson's Democratic Party* (*This timeline has been changed since original publication.) After becoming president he ordered Congress to pass legislation called "An Act for creating a Road from Albany unto Augusta", which would provide funding for building this road.* (*This timeline has been changed since original publication.) The act provided $5 million towards creating this road from Albany eastward through Cobb County - money that would be used today to support agricultural interests near Atlanta.- *Please see our article about Andrew Johnson: Life & Times for more information on this story.* In 1846, Methodist preacher Drs John Wesley Hardee (1788-1865) and Rev Solomon Hinkle (1801-68) founded First Methodist Church #2 in present day Carrolton along with Reverend Hinkle’s wife Hannah Woolridge Hardee (1800-64). Reverend Hardee served as both pastor and lay trustee until his death in 1865 at age 82 years old; Mrs Hardee continued herorship until her own death four years later at age 91 years old††(*Hannah Woolridge Harding died suddenly at home while pregnant with their third child; however their fourth child survived infancy.) . On July 8th 1870 Rev Newton Longstreet preached his last sermon outside of Greenville before moving back East inside the walls of First Methodist Church #2††(*NewTON LONGSTREET born October 12th 1800 died September 16th 1870 aged 65 years old; buried next door beside Hannah Woolridge Harding inside First Methodist Church #2*) . On December 6th 1870 Confederate Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest surrendered Camp Hawkins west side Railroad tracks just south of present day Rearview Rd., west side Of White Settlement Rd located about 2 miles SE from Present Day Hillierstown neighborhood corner approximately 1/4 mile NW from rear view Rd., Entrance From Camp Hawkins Trail leading eastward about 4 miles northeast CorneringWoodruff St./Moses St.; also Surrendered was Private Benjamin Pickett USMC during Battle Of Chickamauga Creek .)
