Carrollton, Georgia is a small town located in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 7,619 at the 2010 census. Carrollton is known for its Cochran College and Armstrong University campuses. The first settler in what is now Carrollton was James Cochran who came to the area in 1814. He built a cabin on the edge of what is now the city of Carrollton. The town was named after him in 1821 when he donated land to make it a borough. In 1865, Arlington County was formed from parts of Fulton and Gwinnett Counties and Carrollton became part of Arlington Heights. It wasn't until 1966 that McIntosh Road (now US- 11) was built through the center of town which made it possible for people to commute to jobs in Atlanta or other cities without having to go all the way out into rural Fulton County. In 1971, Armstrong University opened its doors as the first university north of Atlanta. Since then, Armstrong has grown into one of America's leading higher education institutions with over 60 colleges and universities across 44 states and Canada. He began farming near present-day Carrollton and developed a small business trading goods up the Chattahoochee River. In 1825, he sold his farm and set out for what is now Alabama with his family. After arriving at what is now Chattanooga, Tennessee, they built the first sawmill on the Chattahoochee River. They also started a grocery store and store house which still stands today. In 1828, James Carroll married Sarah Goodloe who had come to live in this area with her parents and siblings after being widowed in Maryland. The couple moved to their current location on Stone Creek Road within three years of each other. Their home soon became an important part of local society as it served as both their home and office while they continued to operate their businesses together until her death in 1886). Sarah Goodloe played an instrumental role in developing many aspects of local life including early education for young girls and boys, building roadsides benches for passengers waiting for trains or boats at Stone Creek Ferry Landing (now known as Canton), donating land for public parks throughout the community – most notably Druid Hills Park –and serving as president of both the Ladies Home Journal Club and Bearcat Club during its early days (today Ravenswood Park honors her memory). James Carrol died suddenly on October 15th 1865 while travelling downriver on hishunting trip with some friends fromAlabama; he had just completed harvesting honeycombs off Mill Shoals Bridge when he fell into the river below (the story behind this event remains unclear but it is said that he may have been buried nearby)). His wifeSarah took over running their business until her death two years later on December 7th 1865 aged 54 years old after having raised six children with him: four daughters (born between 1830-1835) who also lived near Stone Creek Road; John Fenton Carrol Jr., James Fenton Carrol III & Mary Anna Carrol who all resided outside of town at various time points during their lives; John Fenton Carrol Sr., born about 1840 spent much time living near Byram Plantation where he operated a ferry service across the Chattahoochee River
