This ordinance helped spur development around downtown including new retail stores, services such as electricity and water distribution, improvements to public transportation (the first streetcar line ran through town in 1903), new housing developments (most notably Friendship Towers [now Friendship Park], built 1911), professional sports teams (the Falcons played their first football game in 1909), numerous parks (including Friendship Park) through which citizens could walk or bike without fear of crime or street harassment from whites who saw black people as second-class citizens living below them in economic status.
