Carrollton is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,575 at the 2010 census. It lies on the north bank of the Chattahoochee River and is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Carrollton was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1819 as a farmstead on what is now North Carrollton Avenue. The name derived from Carrol (a Scottish Highlander), which means "fair field." On November 3, 1865, General Andrew Johnson issued an Executive Order creating Liberty Township within Fulton County; this event led to increased settlement west of Interstate 20 and development along Deer park Road and Dunbar Boulevard which became known as "Ford Heights". In 1927, Ford Heights attained city status when its citizens voted to annex portions of adjoining Powder Springs Township; this action allowed Ford Heights to become one municipality with a population greater than 2,000 residents concurrent with its own incorporation date that year. In 1924-25 Cherokee Nation gold miners began prospecting for coal near present day Highway 278 (later US 69) between Decatur and Auburn; these men formed the Auburn Coal Mining Company Limited which purchased 5 acres adjacent to Schuyler's Hotel at Ferry Road for $1 per tonne mined before production ceased due to competition from other mines around Auburn during World War II but resumed after America entered into war In 1951 Mayor Floyd Bledsoe announced plans for annexation by Atlanta of portions including part east of I-20 between Cobb Parkway/I–75 junction and US 129E/SR 27 interchange The vote resulted in annexation by Atlanta on December 4 making Carrolltown an official city There have been many changes over time including elimination or addition of streets (such as Old Main Street being renamed Fair Oaks Boulevard), renaming buildings etc., but most notably has been growth within housing developments with several high rise apartments being completed throughout town
