The growth of railroad transportation in southern Georgia during the 19th century changed the character of Carrollton forever. Beginning in 1867, railroads brought new residents to town and created new opportunities for businesses and commerce. Railroads also increased traffic through downtown which sparked an expansion of education and medical services within the community. In 1916, Clyde Frazier became mayor after becoming one of only two African Americans ever elected to statewide office in Georgia when he won election as sheriff of Fulton County; Frazier would serve until his death in 1978. One hundred years after its founding, Carrollton remains an important cultural destination for Georgiansof all ages – hosting dozens of events each year that draw thousands of visitors from throughout the state
