Carrollton is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia, located on the Chattahoochee River just upstream from Atlanta. The population was 151,515 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area and has been designated as a center for technology, media and entertainment economy development by the City of Atlanta Office of Economic Development.. The name “ Carrollton” was derived from Captain James Carroll who fought in the American Revolution and later served as Governor of Georgia (1785-90). The first permanent settler in what would become Carrollton was James Robertson (1812-1896), one of several Scotsmen who came to help build cotton plantations near what is now downtown Atlanta. By 1827, Robertson had erected a frame courthouse which he named “Athens” after his home country. In 1828, John Wesley Powell began exploring canals that would lead to this new area known as Fulton County on December 5th with plans to found a town called Etowah on these lands. However, when he reached Cherokee Nation Headquarters northeast of where today's Carrollton sits he realized that there were no villages or towns within his proposed boundaries so he abandoned his plans for an Etowah townsite and continued further downriver towards what would eventually become Decatur County. On July 7th, 1830 wagonloads of settlers arrived at what is now downtown Atlanta from all over South America via steamboats carrying immigrants searching for new opportunities in North America. Many residents from nearby Macon County decided to move intoAtlanta too because it seemed like everything was growing rapidly insouth central Georgia – including transportation options! The first store opened its doors on October 1st 1830 in what is now Wardsboro Square near present day First Baptist Church – just two years after the city limits were established! By 1835, initial streetscape work had begun around what are now Fourth Street NW and Constitution Avenue NE; this included laying brick sidewalks along both sides of Constitution Avenue between Peachtree Road NW and Ponce de Leon Boulevard NW; grading lots; planting trees; doing water works; width/length measurement surveys; surveying land bounded by Broad Street SE & Auburn Court SE & Dunwoody Road NE – all while keeping an eye out for possible threats such as Native Americans living east of Decatur Street! 1 year later on November 12th another store opened its doors – this time called “NewGeorgia” due to its location adjacent to New Market Park across Fromwadne Avenue SW from today’s Sears Tower! Thisenterprise represented a major milestone not only because it marked the first commercial building constructed within city limits but also because it signaledthe beginningofoneof Atlantanetwork's most prolific periods: growth followed profits until World War II when suburban development overwhelmed downtown businesseskilling off traditional shopping areas like New Georgia Plaza…..Today marksthe centenary anniversaryofthat original business opening….ItwasalsoduringthistimethatAtlantabegantobeidentified largelyasTHECityOFTechandEntertainment industry destinationsratherthanjustanother regional southeastern community
