Carrollton is a city in Carroll County, Georgia, United States. The population was 26,542 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Carrolton was founded in 1836 as a small frontier town on the Chattahoochee River. The first settler in what would become Carrollton was John Dickey who arrived in 1835 from Kentucky with his family. Dickey and his wife Sarah had nine children and one daughter died young. They started a cotton plantation near present day Slaughter Road and built their home there on a bluff overlooking the river. Dickey served as sheriff of Carroll County for two terms from 1839-1841 and 1843-1845 and as treasurer of Carroll County for three terms from 1840-1844 He also taught school in nearby Decatur until 1838 when he moved to Carrolton to become its first postmaster. In 1860, James Waddell bought land northeast of present day Slaughter Road and began developing it into what would become downtown Carrollton. He named his development "Downtown". When Waddell died in 1865, his son John took over ownership of Downtown while continuing to develop it further into what became known today as the Financial District or "The Hill". In 1888, Downtown name was changed again to "Carrollton", after General William Troup's battle victory against Confederate forces at Battle Creek Bridge (now Southside Park). One interesting fact about downtown Carrollton is that it features several original buildings dating back to before=~ 1830 which have been preserved including Butler's Hotel (now called Gaston Motel), First Baptist Church (now called First Presbyterian Church), Post Office Building #1 (now called Bank of America Tower), The Trust Company Building (now known as Starbuck's Coffee House) and others which can be visited during regular business hours only or by appointment through Historic streetcar tours offered by either Olde Town Cars (www.oldetowncarscarrolltownGA).

Carrollton, Georgia was founded by James Carroll in 1819. The town was named after General George Washington and it became an important center of commerce and industry. The area now known as Carrollton was first settled by Cherokee Indians in the late 17th century. In 1819, James Carroll bought land near what is now downtown Carrollton from the Cherokees. He developed the area into a thriving town with businesses, schools, and a population of around 100 people. By 1830, Carrolton had become a railroad junction and began to grow in importance as a commercial center for the region. It played an important role in the American Revolution and during the Reconstruction era following Reconstruction there were many efforts to revive Berryville as a major cotton-growing community but these failed due to difficulties encountered with local politics. In 1870, business interests within the new city of Atlanta moved to move their operations to new quarters in downtown Carrollton which led to its decline as a commercial center until 1981 when it regained some of its former prominence thanks to revived fortunes within Atlanta's tech industries. Today, Carrollton is one of several small towns located within Cobb County that still maintain significant economic activity despite being smaller than most larger counties in Georgia due largely to its location on two key Interstate highways: I-75 and I-95.
Carrollton was founded in 1837 by Nathaniel Carroll and his wife, Sarah. The town is named after General Nathan Bedford Forrest, who purchased the land in 1835. The first post office opened in 1840. In 1865, the town was renamed for General George Washington. The name change coincided with a local election held to approve the renaming of all local government entities in Georgia under this new name. In 1984, Carrollton became a city and retains its original name as well as its governmental structure.
