The early years were difficult for cartwheelers and their drivers who relied on horse carts to get around town; however, this changed with the construction of a road system in 1907 which allowed cars and trucks to enter and exit the small community without having to go down ramps or through alleyways. The first grocery store opened in 1909 and later additions include an insurance company (1922), bank (1929), radio station WCBA (1935), auto dealership (1981), lumberyard (1991) and several restaurants including IHOP (1998) before it closed its doors in 2003 due to economic decline%.
