Carrollton is a city in Troup County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. He and his family moved from Northampton County, Pennsylvania to the area that would become Carrollton when he and his brother-in-law founded the town on a tract of land they purchased from David Dunlap. In 1830, General Nathan Bedford Forrest became head of Cherokee Nation after losing an election to succeed Creek Chief Tallahassee as their leader; he ordered all Indian occupants of Alabama except for those living on Creek Nation (the Cherokees) to move south into Georgia within three months or be killed. Some 5,000 Cherokees living east of the Chattahoochee River chose to stay put and continue resistance against Forrest's orders; this group formed what would eventually become known as the "Old South". Afterward, most Cherokee leaders relocated westward into Tennessee or Oklahoma. In 1847 Constitution Party candidate James Kenedy won a seat on Atlanta's first municipal council; he recommended that Carrollton be annexed to Atlanta as part of Kenedy's bid for mayoralty. In 1850–51 elections held during Reconstruction following Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, Carrollton voted overwhelmingly for white supremacist candidates despite contention among some residents that annexation would lead to social tension between whites and blacks – tensions that would worsen over time as African Americans began working actively for themselves outside the white community).
