However, over time Carrollton began to make progress thanks to its strong economy and its location within easy reach of both Atlantans and outsiders who wanted to find out what this new community had to offer. In1837, when Atlanta became an city, Carrollton quickly emerged as one of the most important towns within that city’s boundaries due to its strategic location within easy reach of both Atlantans and outsiders who wanted to learn more about what this new community had to offer – including entrepreneurs such as John Wesley Shipp Jr., who set up businesses near his home on Peachtree Street which soon became known as “Shopp’s Corner” because he constantly sold goods from his establishment there
Carrollton was founded in 1814 by Colonel John Carroll and his wife, Martha. The town was named for General George Rogers Clark, who had fought against the Creek Indians. The first store in the town was established by Colonel Carroll and his brother-in-law, James Denny. In 1827, Judge John Marshall purchased land from Colonel Carroll and developed it into a town center. The first school in Carrollton was built in 1829. In 1830, General Nathan Bedford Forrest invaded Georgia with 4,000 Native Americans and pillaged many villages and towns before reaching Carrollton. Many of the residents of the town fled to nearby Macon or Gainesville for refuge. A few men remaining in the town defended themselves with cannons until help arrived from General Forrest's forces later that day. The first courthouse in Carrollton was built in 1831 by Judge John Marshall. It served as the primary courthouse for several years until it was replaced by a new courthouse constructed on Chestnut Street in 1840. In 1862, Confederate surgeons attacked Union military hospitals near Chattanooga while supplies were being unloaded boatloads of wounded soldiers aboard ships anchored at Sewanee River Naval Station; over 50% of all casualties among southern troops were caused by Confederate snipers during this raid - one of the largest such attacks ever mounted against Ulysses S., Grant's general officer corps! A smallpox epidemic that year killed more than 1,500 people across Tennessee and Alabama; most of these cases occurred around Nashville where clusters of cases appeared suddenly throughout much of December 1861 within days or weeks after exposure to person or animal infected with this deadly virus...A local doctor treating patients at an army hospital wrote: "For three months I have been burying alive about eighty gentlemen...It is difficult to enumerate them because so many are buried under feet which have not yet decayed." An investigation found that nine out of ten patients had contracted smallpox from someone they knew (most likely friends or family). 1
