They arrived in 1795 as part of a group of Englishmen who explored and claimed new land on the Chattahoochee River for Britain. One of these explorers, John Lewis, named his town after General James Robertson, who had led an expedition against the Creek Indians near present-day Chattanooga. In 1803, Ulysses S. Grant moved his family from Savannah to this new country and purchased 1,848 acres (6 km²) east of present-day Carrollton from Major Isaac Hawkins for $10 per acre (3 m²). This became known as Grant's Valley because it lay within what would become Atlanta proper. In 1835, Forbes renamed the community "Carrollton" after General Nathan Bedford Forrest's forces burned down Fort Moultrie on one of their raids into southeastern Georgia during the War Betweenthe States. At that time Forrest was commanding Confederate forces at Chickamauga Court House in southern Tennessee]. Grant eventually sold all his holdings in Atlanta to Andrew Johnson for $2 million cash plus interest on that money which he used to finance Union military campaigns throughout the South during the American Civil War. In 1851, Anna Prentiss moved here from New York City with her husband John Prentiss Jr., who had purchased land in central Georgia on which they erected a farmstead called Blackwater Hill (later named after their daughter). They would become one of the most notable families in Carrollton – Anna helped found both the Ladies Home Journal and American Woman’s Weekly magazines, while John served as mayor from 1897-1901 and as state senator from 1923-1929; he also founded The Atlanta Constitution Newspaper Company in 1903.) During World War II, many local companies donated goods or services to help support the war effort including textile mills such as Brown & Williamson & Cartersville Mills Inc., phosphate producer Gulfstream Phosphate Products Co., Allied Signal Corp., Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., Coca Cola Bottling Plant #1 (now known as Peachtree Cornet Productions Inc.), United Service Club Headquarters (now used by Dooley University), First National Bank of Georgia (now Chatham State University) and Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport!
Carrollton was founded in 1824 by James and Damean Carrol. The town was named for General John Carroll, who fought in the American Revolution. The first shop opened in 1827. In 1830, the town had a population of about eighty-five people. By 1840, the population had grown to one hundred and fifty-six people.
