Carrollton is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 14,711 at the 2010 census. Carrollton is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. It is located on the eastern edge of metro Atlanta and is bordered by Paulding County to the south and west, Cook County to the north, and Douglas County to the east. The Town of Carrollton was formed in 1868 from parts of two other towns: Tellico Plains and Brookhaven. The original town plat included land that still makes up most of downtown Carrollton today. The first post office was established in 1870. During Reconstruction, many African American citizens moved into what is now Carrollton from New York City or other parts of southern Georgia because their homes were not granted provisional voting rights until after Reconstruction ended. In 1875, a group of businessmen from I-285 near Peachtree Road decided to create a new city with 100 acres (400 m2) for a courthouse, jail, schoolhouse and 500 homes as its core – which would eventually become Atlanta. They named it "Canton" after Cheshire Township in Pennsylvania where they had been born; but soon realized that "Canton" sounded too much like "Atlanta". So they changed it back to "Carrollton." In 1912–13 during prohibition era Carrolton became home to America's first speakeasy when Harry Kelly opened his speakeasy called The Owl on Moreland Avenue (now US Highway 1). During World War II one branch of the U.S military operated out of Carrolton while another branch camped near present day Peachtree Road/Mt Royal Parkway for Supply Troops training purposes; both branches closed down shortly afterwards due to lack of economic justification for such an expensive endeavor outside peacetime military operations only six miles away at nearby Paulding Air Force Base instead! On July 4th 1944 during World War II an aerial bombardment by Japanese forces destroyed most buildings in downtown CarrolTON leaving only 3 brick buildings standing today including Old Courthouse which now houses local government offices Historic district listing #HG1-045

However, due to zoning laws at that time which limited development within certain areas ofAtlanta limits, only slight changes took place within the town of Carrolton itself until 1965 when new zoning regulations allowed more extensive redevelopment of Downtown Carrolton including an expansion of shopping mall/mallard space called "CenturyLink Plaza" as well as significant additions to many existing businesses in adjacent neighborhoods like Springdale and Dunwoody
