Canton is a city located in Lumpkin County, Georgia. The population was 11,986 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1853 by freed slaves as the town of North Canton. In 1865 it became the capital of ConfederateGeorgia after Atlanta was captured by Union forces. In 1898, during the Spanish-American War, Canton served as a military garrison for Florida's Pensacola Peninsula. On November 4, 1898, a group of white supremacists and nationalists known as the Klu Klux Klan invaded the city and burned down several businesses before lynching two black men suspected of being homosexuals. This event is often cited as one of the most active anti-immigrant riots in American history.

In 1838, construction began on what would become Fort Jackson which served as Georgia's primary military outpost until 1865. During this time, Canton also became known for its cotton-growing industry which led to its nickname "The Cotton Capital of America." In 1871, after years of planning and construction, Fort Jackson was completed and became headquarters for General Ulysses S. Grant's Union army duringthe American Civil War. After Reconstruction ended in 1870s with African Americans becoming fully integrated into American society, many white residents left Canton for other parts of Georgia or South Carolina; however, some continue to live there today as retirees or commuters fromAtlanta or other nearby cities

Canton is a small town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. It is the only municipality in Muskegon County and it is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. The name "Canton" comes from the French word "canal." The first settler in Canton was Nicholas Kappes who arrived in 1814. A post office called Canton was established in 1825, and remained open until 1892. The first school in Canton was built on what is now Main Street. In 1827, James Hargrave founded a gristmill on the east side of town. During the 1830s and 1840s, lumber barons such as John Denny bought land around Canton to build mills and sawmills. By 1850, there were twenty-six mills located around Canton; six of these were owned by Denny himself. In 1847, General Henry Clay Broomfield purchased 2/3 of section 7 (now portion of Mount Pleasant) in what is now Wayne County for $5,000 cash plus 5% interest on any future sales. On October 1st of that year Broomfield designated this tract as Township No.. 6 with a population of 25 citizens authorized to vote therein under Mexico township law then existing (the Act providing for township organization had not yet been passed). On December 12th Broomfield proclaimed that this new township would be named after his friend George Washington because he considered him one of America's "fathers". As early as 1840 or earlier some people had proposed naming their new settlement after General James Kappes – but no action was taken until1847 when Broomfield made an announcement which led to villagehood status being granted to both Mount Pleasant Township and Township No.#6 on December 12th1847 A gift from Michael Whelan given to Friends Meeting House Restoration Committee on behalf of all those living within five miles radius gave rise to present-day Town Name: “Canton” In actuality there are several similar namesakes throughout western Michigan including Clearwater Harbor Borough (Clearwater Co., MI), Big Rapids Borough (Big Rapids Co., MI), Hastings Beach Borough (Hastings Beach WA), Mackinac Island Borough (Mackinac Island Mich.), White Sands Beach Borough (White Sands NM), Sandusky Bay borough(Sandusky OH)), Traverse City borough(Traverse City MI)), Homer Glen borough(Homer Glen MN)), Waterford borough(Waterford NY))
Canton was first settled in 1785 by colonists from Georgia. The town was named after the Treaty of Canton, which ended the American Revolution. It became a part of the Confederacy during the Civil War.
