The area now known as Canton was first inhabited by Creek Indians before European settlement began. In 1740, Captain James Cook discovered new islands in what is now Georgia while sailing for Great Britain under Captains Anson and Moore. He named them "Island No 1" (now part of Cobb County) because he thought they were two tiny pieces of land joining together like a piece of rock. He reported this discovery to King George III who ordered him to send back more information about these islands so that he could make a proper map! In 1802, Christian settlers from North Carolina arrived in search of land for themselves and set up shop along Telegraph Road near where present-day Canton sits. They named their new village “Canton” after nearby Charlotteville, North Carolina (then part of South Carolina). In 1824–25 John Wesley preached his famous sermon “A Warning To all Nations” from atop Mount Zion Baptist Church which still stands today on Chattahoochee Avenue just outside central Canton limits
