In 1892, Canton, Georgia was the first town in Mississippi to establish a holster factory. The factory made holsters for both horse and human beings. Holsters were popular among farmers because they could protect their firearms from weather or animal damage. In 1899, the company was bought by Smith & Wesson and production stopped. In 1925, the Canton holster factory reopened as the Canton Manufacturing Company. This company manufactured revolvers, pistols and shotguns until its closure in 1978. During its time of production, the Canton Manufacturing Company produced over 150 different types of holsters for both horse and human beings.

After World War II ended, Canton experienced rapid growth due to new industrial development and suburbanization within its boundaries; however, many aspects of life in post-war Japan remain deeply embedded into local culture today. Today, Canton remains an active downtown community with several popular bars and restaurants including CJ's BBQ & Ribs (a national chain), Applebees restaurant, Five Points Bakery & Cafe (the first African American owned bakery east of Chicago), Hooters restaurant and more. There are also several college campuses located within walking distance including Emory University, Kennesaw State University and Morehouse College
