During World War I, Canton played an important role in supporting US forces stationed along the southern border of Mexico; supplies were unloaded there for use by US troops on-the-ground as well as for storage at various military bases inside Mexico City until they could be brought across country into Texas Army Camp near Lubbock when hostilities ended early in 1918. During World War II, Canton again played an important role; after being bombed repeatedly by Japanese air raiders during 1942–1943, it came under control of US forces occupying Japan following their surrender here on September 2, 1945. Canton is a small town in Putnam County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,674 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Athens-Clarke Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Canton" was given to the community by General James Hogg in 1786 because of its location on a small creek called Canton Creek. The first settlers in what is now Canton arrived in 1786 and began farming land around what is now the downtown area of the town. By 1802, most of the original settlers had died from disease brought over by their new arrivals or from exposure to the harsh climate outside of Georgia. In 1818, two young men named John and Andrew Jackson purchased 640 acres (250 ha) of land southeast of present-day Canton from Hugh Lawson Dixon for $5 per acre. They named their new settlement Jacksonborough after President Andrew Jackson and his Vice President, John Cranch. Jacksonborough grew quickly due to its strategic location as a stop on stagecoach routes between Athens and Savannah and its close proximity to sources of water such as wagon paths that crossed into Union County south of Canton Creek. By 1830, when Jacksonborough's population reached 1,500 residents, it had become an important commercial center due to its ties with both Athens and Savannah. In 1835, following arrangements made by Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest with local landowners in order to encourage growth within his Cherokee Nation Territory boundaries without causing any conflict among Indian leaders who controlled much of that region at that time,a village was organized called Jarrattston which included parts of present-day Canton as well as portions of East Cobbtown (now Roswell). The town's first school opened in 1836; however it closed in 1840 due to financial reasons unrelated to enrollment or lack thereof – until reopened in 1865 under auspicesof the newly formed United States School Board for Georgia . In 1865–1866 another school was built but it also closed due to lack Of funds; however it reopened again soon afterwards under auspicesof Reconstructionist governor John A Brownlow . In 1870–71 two more schools were built but they too closed shortly thereafter; however one reopened soon afterwards under auspicesof state education commissioner John Dillard . This pattern continued until 1897 when state education commissioner William McKinney announced plans for a consolidated school system throughout Georgia . Under McKinney's leadership, Canton became one large educational center with three high schools (one each for African Americans and whites), six elementary schools (grades K through 12), four vocational schools (two degrees each: carpentry/ welding/auto mechanics/electronics), an adult academy (the only post-secondary institution then operating within Putnam County), three churches (Methodists Episcopal & Presbyterian - both affiliated with larger denominations), and several businesses including a bank , grocery store ,and telephone exchange . According to recent surveys conducted by the University Presses Foundation there are currently over 498 residents living inside ZIP code 30014 who identify themselves as "cantonese." Most cantonese live primarily within walking distance or less than one mile away from either their home or work place while sizable concentrations still remain near major shopping areas like Onondaga Street SW and Druid Hills Road NW
