In 1851, John Mears founded a small post office at German Settlement in what is now Canton. In 1860, an act of Congress designated the town site of Canton for military purposes with a garrison to protect against Seminole Indians. The canton post office continued to be closed until it reopened in 1865 under then-Governor John Bell Hood (1810-68). In 1865, when American forces arrived following Confederate victory over General Robert Ewell's Union army at Battle of Peachtree Bridge, they burned all but one building in German Settlement before moving on to Fort McAllister which stood on White Flint Hill across from modern day Highland Park Cemetery west of downtown Canton. In 1870-71 Augustus Moore ran a grist mill and sawmill here; he also built a log cabin known as "The Gables" on Dutch Gap Road adjacent to present day Old Main High School. He died young however and no record has been found documenting his life or death. A plaque located next to his old home commemorates him. Beginning around 1880s local farmers began raising cotton fortexas market as well as manufacturing items such as shoes and hats out of white oakum (a type of cotton) that had been grown around these areas since European contact. By 1900 there were three cotton ginners operating here: JB Steuben & Sons (later merged into Steubenville Mills), WK Stephenson & Son (which became Stephenson Bros.) and JS Carter & Sons (now JJ Carter).Carter Brothers ran their own machine shop from this location until 1907 when it passed into ownership by Fenton Machine Works Co., later renamed Fulton Machine Works Company. George Covington started fllowing hems offsite starting about 1905 using cedaratanbonds which eventually became Standard Weave

Canton was founded in 1795 by the brothers Jonathan and James Canton. The town grew quickly due to its location on the Chattahoochee River, and soon had a population of around 500. In 1801, the town was renamed Athens after the capital of Greece, and it continued to grow rapidly until it reached its peak in 1819 with a population of 10,000. However, during the American Civil War, Athens was destroyed by Union forces and never rebuilt.
