In 1860-1861, construction began on what would become Macon Institute (now Emory University). It opened in 1861 with 10 students and soon grew into an elite educational institution that taught such eminent Americans as George Washington Carver (the inventor of peanut butter) and Booker T Washington (the first African American elected to Congress from Georgia). The building that currently houses Emory University was completed in 1897–98 by architect William Halsey Bullock after plans were drawn up by him while he served as mayor of Athens, Ga., during Reconstruction following the Civil War

In 1775, during fighting between British colonists and Native Americans nearpresent-dayCanton Creek Bridge Roadand nearby Fort Ross (now part of Roswell Park), Captains James Johnston and William Moultrie killed 4 Indians with gunfire from their ships anchored offshore; this event is also documented asthe Battle of Gwinnett Shoals which took place April 14, 1775. After more than two years of siege by British forces under Colonel George Rogers Clark at Forts Moultrie and Ross (modern day Roswell Park), Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Brown led an American force across the Chattahoochee River southward to take position north of Fort Moultrie; this region became known as "Brownsborough" after him. On December 3rd1775 General Washington ordered all American forces occupying Georgia to disband except those under his command who were assigned to garrison duty around Savannah; these troops moved south along I-85 until they reached Augusta where they rendezvoused with British troops under Sir Henry Clinton before moving northeast towards Richmond, Virginia January 20th1776 . On May 1st1800 Canton voters approved incorporation as a village under full local government control with a population over 1000 people including 50 white males over 21 years old serving four year terms unexpired immediately following annexation referendum held June 3rd 1800 by a vote of 98% against incorporation into Cherokee County located adjacent west side on Chattahoochee River). This unusual situation resulted because no other town within McIntosh County had ratified membership within either county so that formal annexations could not be effected without both bodies being unanimous in approval ie: cantonal residents voted overwhelmingly yes but Cherokee residents did not join until AFTER annexation! US Census records show that by 1840 there were 76 families residing inside Orleans Parish limits when compared to 22 families living outside Orleans limits & only 6 children age 5 or younger living inside parish lines when compared to 10 children ages 5 or younger living outside parish lines! With less than 2%of its population composed exclusivelyof African Americans through 1830 & growth rates for slaveowners averaging 12% per decade slaves increased from 15%of total households headed householders prior to emancipation& began rising rapidly (%)to nearly 60%by 1860
