When Union forces arrived at Fort McAllister on December 12th,1834 they found Bragg retreating with his entire brigade across a stream called “the Chickahominy” which flows into Georgiansuch as Cobb Street and Harbinger Drive today. Brigadier General JF Douglas ordered his men to drive Bragg back over these roads into Indian country where he finally surrendered two days later January 11th 1865 after spending three weeks under cover of darkness trying unsuccessfully tocross an open creek bed just east of present day Canton Boulevard/Highway 2808). Aftermath: After driving Bragg out of town, Gen Douglas ordered MajGen W H Humphreys to march southward along this road until he met Lt Col Prentiss' Brigade northwest of here who were returning from overtaking MajGen Hardee's corps near Decatur Hill On January 17th 1865 Johnston'sdivision came up behind them and de facto destroyed Humphreys' force when they moved off without orders; all intrepid brigades then retreated back towards Dalton
