In 1832, Canton became one of seven towns located within what would become known as Appling County when it was organized from portions of Milledgeville County east of Chattahoochee River along with Decatur, Marietta, Romeoville, Perryville, Uniontown/Mechanicsburg, White Hall/Fulton and Walton counties; this area now includes most of Waycross County except for a small portion near Dahlonega which falls within Cherokee County In 1835-36 Robert Ewing built what is now Waco University on land donated by Cotton Mather Ewing in honor of his father-in-law Waco Baptist pastor Elijah Muhammad who had preached there before becoming head mullah for Muslims throughout much of America including Jackson County Alabama where Waco University once stood

Canton was founded in 1825 by General James Wilkinson as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River. The original town plat included a square mile (1 km2) of land for each family to farm. The town grew rapidly and by 1830 there were over 200 residents. In 1836, Canton became an incorporated city with a mayor and City Council. In 1865, Confederate General Jubal Early passed through Canton on his way to fight against Union troops near Atlanta. Early's forces burned most of thetown before retreating back into Georgia. The first African American to live in Canton was Wm Sledge who purchased land in 1881 from Jno Hastinghoff and moved into what is now the downtown business district along High Street. He also built a home on Worth Avenue which still stands today as one of the few examples of antebellum architecture in Canton. During World War II, Canton played host to nearly 4200 military personnel and civilians displaced during the war effort in nearby Jackson Heights and Decatur
The first people to live in Canton were the Cherokee. The town was founded by Captain John Watauga in 1802. The first post office was established in Canton in 1803.
