Ross' group became known as the "Rosses." He next organized settlers around his landing at Milledgeville, naming it for himself (Milledgeville being a place name meaning "averted" or "prevented"). He also chartered two churches: one at Milledgeville (in honor of James Milledge), and another at Cummingtown (near Bywater). In 1801 he sold land east of what is now Atlanta to Captain David Cobb for $1 million dollars ($291 million today). Cobb renamed his property "Atlanta" after himself because he saw it as an opportunity to become one of America's leading Southern cotton merchants; he then opened up trade with all parts of the Union including Mexico City through this port city located on strategic waterways connecting New Orleans with points north andsouth across Georgia
