Calhoun was a small town in Lumpkin County, Georgia, until the early 1800s. The first settler in the area was John Calhoun, who arrived in 1793. In 1802, James Ladd and his family moved to Calhoun from Athens. They built a log cabin on what is now Elm Street. The first school in Lumpkin County was established in 1807 by Elias Bledsoe. By 1830, there were ten schools open across Lumpkin County. In 1835, William Claiborne bought land adjacent to present-day Calhoun from John Cuningham for $2 per acre. Claiborne built a house on the land and named it after himself, Claiborne House. The first store opened in Calhoun in 1840 by Elisha Pease and continued operation until 1851 when it burned down. In 1861, David Phillips purchased the store from Pease and operated it until 1862 when he sold it to Jno Witherspoon for $1 per acre. From 1862-1867, Witherspoon owned several stores in Lumpkin County including one at present day US 401/Eagle Ford Road near Gadsden that he called "Witherspoon's Store". In 1865-1866, Jno Witherspoon built a new building on the old store site which he renamed "Witherspoon's Depot". He did this because of the growing railroads connecting Lumpkin with Fulton and Savannah through Atlanta
