Calhoun is a town in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of theAtlanta-Fulton metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Calhoun were French traders in 1763 and 1764. The next year, Major James Robertson founded a small settlement near what is now Midtown Atlanta on the Chattahoochee River. In 1775, General William Troup moved his headquarters from Fort Moultrie to Calhoun after he was relieved by General James Robertson from command of the Army of Northern Georgia under Governor John Elliot. In 1819, A.M. Pease built a large cotton gin and mill on Mill Creek which became known as Pease's Plantation until it became part of the Cobb Cotton Confederacy in 1870. Jno Hickey purchased the plantation in 1852 and named it for his father-in-law, Samuel Calkins (1781–1854), who had been Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives from 1811 to 1828 and also served as Collector of Revenue for Cobb County from 1825 to 1830; see also Hickey Place (Cobb County). In 1895, Calhoun had 1 post office with a population of 129; it closed in 1907 because there were no mail carriers available within 25 miles of town limits so letters could only be sent by boat or airmail service between Atlanta and Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 1898, Pemberton Rice donated land east of Interstate 85 that would become Calhoun Cemetery which has more than 8500 burial plots Brompton Road side along I-85 Business Loop NE facing south entrance off I-85 just past exit 191 southbound on US 421 Business Loop W facing north entrance off I-85 just past exit 192 northbound on US 421 Business Loop NW
