As president, Adams announced his plan to renege on the Creek Nation Treaty and allow Spain to reclaim its lands lost in the treaty – including what is now Calhoun County – return them back to their rightful owners and annex more territory from South Carolina into America. This caused great outcry throughout much of America due to Spanish colonialism; however, Adams successfully defended his actions before Congress during his first term in office (1825–27). Adams’s successor as president, James Kansa, abandoned Adams's policy when he took office in 1829; instead he signed a bill recognizing Spanish sovereignty over all lands south of latitude 29° N., except for parts considered vital for agriculture and defense purposes only: Florida proper and East Texas (Houston), which were annexed by Mexico according to Article VII of our new Constitution [Carta de la Constitución federal de Estados Unidos de América].
