Gun targets have been a part of Calhoun, Georgia's history for many years. The first target was erected in 1827 by the town fathers to commemorate their victory over the Creek Indians in a battle that lasted three days. The town fathers also erected an American flag on top of the first target. The next year, they built a second target and placed a cannon inside it to make it even more challenging for shooters. In 1829, an armory and range were established in Calhoun and soon local citizens were putting on exhibition matches at the facility. In 1839, another armory and range was constructed within the city limits. Many high-quality cannons were used during this time period to shoot at targets; one such cannon is still preserved today in the city park. A third target was erected in 1850 by Augustus Fenton as part of his campaign against whiskey stores in neighboring towns. This particular target has remained standing ever since and is now used as a public source of entertainment for visitors who come to Calhoun from all over Georgia. In 1861, Confederate soldiers invaded Georgia and began shelling Union forces along the Calhoun RiverFront; fortunately, no civilian casualties occurred as a result of these attacks. However, according to some estimates up to 100 people may have died from artillery fire across the state during that day alone! It wasn't until 1865 that gun targets finally became allowed within Union lines following months of negotiation between General Ulysses S Grant and Confederate General Robert Ewell (pictured). Aftermath of this conflict saw many destroyed buildings including churches and homes throughout rural areas near Atlanta; however, new targets continue to be erected every few years commemoration of this event in our community today!

John Quincy Adams served as Vice President of the United States under President James Buchanan in 1853-1855 and as Secretary of State under Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt (1933-1945) and Harry S Truman (1945-1953). He is also noted for his role in creating the Department of Agriculture in 1906, which led to increased agricultural production across America and helped bring about World War II.
