Calhoun is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first settler in Calhoun was John Crouch in 1818. He and his family Removal Act of 1830 allowed for free Negroes to move westward into what is now Fulton County as long as they possessed "positive evidence of moral rectitude." In 1836, General Nathan Bedford Forrest moved his cavalry eastward from Georgia to take advantage of the new state government's open recruitment policy for infantrymen and cavalry officers. When he discovered that only 3 blacks were living in Calhoun, he offered them land if they could start a plantation there. They agreed and named their plantation after General Forrest himself – Fort Pillow (now known as Calhoun). Fort Pillow served as both a military post and slaveholding establishment until 1799 when it reverted to Creek control following the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek. After that time, it continued to serve as an Indian frontier outpost until 1799 also when it became part of the Upson Purchase lands which later passed through Cherokee hands to become parts of Georgia
