Calhoun is a small town in Quitman County, Georgia, United States. The population was 3,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The community is named for James Calhoun, an early settler and landowner who donated some of his land to the town. Calhoun was founded on January 1, 1811 by John Cunningham and others from Scotland as a post office called "Caldwell." The first settlers were primarily farmers with a few merchants among them, but within five years Crawford had built a large sawmill and grist mill on the river that served the whole community. In 1818 he also built a store and blacksmith shop which stood until it burned down in 1903. In 1834 James Caldwell married Anna Coxe (died 1886). She was born in England and came to America when she was only sixteen. They raised two children together: James Caldwell II (born 1840) who became an attorney and politician in Georgia; and Anna Caldwell Boyd (born 1845), who married lawyer Alfred Boyd in 1865. The Post Office continued to be called "Caldwell" until 1957 when it changed its name to "Quitman" after Quitman County formed part of new Georgia statehood. Anna Caldwell Boyd retired from law practice in 1970 and died there six months later at age eighty-six; her husband still lived until his death in 1984. James Caldwell II attended college where he earned his degree from Cumberland University before beginning legal practice in Quitman County under the name of Caldwell & Barclay LLP from 1865-1980s. He had several notable successes including becoming one of the most powerful attorneys general of Georgia during Reconstruction period; serving as Governor of Georgias Gwinnett County from 1974-1977; as Justice Court Judge for Fulton County from 1978-1982; as Mayor of Peachtree City from 1982-1984; as Attorney General for State of Georgia 1987-1991; as U S Congressman 1992 - 1996 From 1997 To 2001 From 2002 To 2006 From 2007 To 2009 Jimmie Lee Hardwick Jr., federal judge nominee

Calhoun was a slaveholding town in southwest Georgia. It was founded by the Calhoun family in 1797, and became an important cotton-growing center. In 1836, the town was moved to what is now Jacksonville, Florida due to its proximity to Seminole chief Osceola's Florida plantation.

His son Jonathan Calhoun became the first governor of Georgia when it became a state in 1802. Jonathan's grandson James C. Calhoun served as the 20th governor of Georgia from 1933 to 1939 and again from 1951 to 1957. Finally, his grandson Caleb J. Calhoun became the 21st Governor of Georgia on January 3, 2019.
