In 1851, another man named John Hemenway started making shotguns inCalhoun too. His shotguns were much more powerful than any other shotguns that had been made before them. This caused some problem for John Hemenway though; he didn't know how to make these powerful shotguns correctly! eventually he did manage to create a few successful shotgun models that people loved! As time passed, more people came into Calhoun and began working on gun barrel production too- especially men who wanted to start their own businesses! Calhoun is a small town in Macon County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Macon-Toombs Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Calhoun was George Washington Carver who arrived there in 1818 with his family. The community name may be derived from "calhoun" meaning "a place to hide." In 1832, John Wesley Hardin founded a cotton plantation here and named it for General Andrew Jackson. In 1843, the community became known as Hardinopolis after Senator James K. Polk of Tennessee won an election here that year as part of a larger political move to annex adjacent Mobile County into Tennessee. At this time the area consisted largely of rural country and agricultural production was limited to subsistence agriculture only; however by 1860 outposts had been established at Allatoona (now Hawkinsville), Georgetown (then Troup), and Dalton (now Decatur). The first post office opened in 1840, but it closed within two years because of lack of patronage. A new post office opened on November 7, 1841 with the name Cottonopolis; it remained open until 1865 when it changed its name to Hardinopolis again due to confusion with other localities nearby with similar names such as Hardship or Hardship Creek. By 1870 Hardinopolis had become an important market center for farmers in the region due to its location near railroad lines and its close access to markets in Athens and Atlanta. The population reached 2,100 by 1880 and 3,000 by 1890; however during the Panic of 1893 hard times struck the community which declined rapidly until 1900 when it numbered 400 residents. During World War II many citizens served in the military including two members of Congress from Georgia: John Lewis Clarke and Charley Hull House

He also served as Superintendent of Schools for Fulton County from 1847 to 1850.
In 1861, during the American Civil War, Calhoun supported the Confederate cause and lent his support to Robert Ewells' army on December 12th when Confederate forces burned down Union-owned stores in downtown Athens. During Reconstruction following the war, Calhoun opposed efforts by Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest to re-establish white rule over black Atlantans through governance by elected officials rather than slaveowners.
"It would seem that James A., one of our most enterprising citizens and an early promoter of our city council system...would have been quite equal with any other man who has taken an interest in physical improvement within its limits," wrote historian Ebenezer Blair about James A.'s role in developing what would become Atlanta.
Nevertheless it will not be disputed that Mr .Calhoun went a great deal beyond mere personal interest or concern for this new community; he exerted all his influence among friends both within and without it for the promotion of its establishment."
