The history of Calhoun, Georgia begins with the arrival of the first Europeans in what is now Georgia in 1733. The area that is now Calhoun was then part of the Cherokee Nation. In 1802, a group of white settlers discovered oil reserves in what is today Calhoun and began to lease land for oil production. The town was founded as a result of this development. The town grew rapidly and by 1907 it had approximately 8,000 residents. However, during World War I, the town was destroyed by fire.
Calhoun is a town in Pike County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chattanooga–area metropolitan area. The early history of Calhoun is unknown. However, it likely began as a small village on the Chattahoochee River about two miles east of present-day Calhoun. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson's forces burned down much of this village and destroyed all evidence that Indian raids had occurred there. The settlement was rebuilt by slave owners and their slaves who named their new community "Calhoun." In 1827, local white men founded what would become Huntsville; however, they continued to call the original Calhoun home until annexation by Chattanooga in 1907. According to oralhistory research done by Calvin Shenton in 1978-79 for an upcoming documentary film about Calhoun called "Citizen Jackson", when Andrew Jackson became president in 1829 he ordered General John Coker to burn all the Indian villages along the Chattahoochee River - including those near present day Calhoun - because they were considered hostile Indian sites which could not be visited without insignificance given Jackson's overall victory over Native Americans throughout his presidency. This order caused great resentment among many white citizens of Pike County because these villages had been through hard times due to crop failures and raiding by Cherokee and other First Nation tribes during Jackson's first term as president (1828-30). Coker complied withJackson's order but decided against burning any structures or demolishing any crops as some people within the area believed that such an action would only lead to more raids from those same Indians since they now knew where valuable crops were located and could therefore sell them easily at lower prices than if they had been left unscathed. An article written in 1927 reported that although General Coker had burned most of the villages on the Chattahoochee River following Andrew Jackson’s orders, several buildings still stood which may have been used as homes or stores for residents before being abandoned after the order was issued. These buildings include a log cabin known as “Old Fort” which is now a park located adjacent to Interstate 65 just outside of town limits; anotherlog cabin known as “White Oak” which sits on private land overlooking downtown; and a thirdlog cabin also known as “Hickory Log Cabin” located about one mile northeast of town off US 27 next to a creek known locally simply as “the Creek” . Additionally three mason jars found within earshot from Old Fort remain todayStill standing are cannonballs found embedded into logs near White Oak Cabin also dating back to prewar days when militia guns were stationed hereabouts

Calhoun is a town in Muscogee County, Georgia, United States. The population was 546 at the 2010 census. It was first settled in 1811. Calhoun is named for General James Knox Calhoun, who led the Union army during the American Civil War. The town was first known as "Knoxville" and later as "Calhoun". In 1826, it changed its name to Muscogee County after the Creek Nation (formerly the Cherokee Nation). The county seat was moved from Hawkins to Calhoun in 1868. In 1905, due to a change in U.S. government law that made Alabama the new state of Mississippi, Muscogee County became part of newly formed Mississippi Territory; however, Calhoun continued to be registered as an incorporated municipality with voting privileges until 1907 when it withdrew from state government entirely. According to one source,, due to this change, only a small number of people lived in Calhoun while most of its citizens lived within the new state boundaries
Calhoun was a slaveholding state in southern Georgia. It was named for John C. Calhoun, the first U.S. senator from South Carolina and a leader of the Nullification Movement, which sought to keep slavery in the south despite federal efforts to end it.
