Calhoun is a city in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 25,058 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The town of Calhoun was founded by Hugh Calhoun in 1811 as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River. He named it for his father, Robert Calkin, who had served in the United States Congress from 1793 to 1800 and again from 1807 to 1809. In 1818, Hugh's brother James built a sawmill on what is now East Park Boulevard and New Market Street near where Interstate 5 and I-285 meet today. In 1830s John Marshall developed land adjacent to what is now downtown Calhoun and named it after himself; this became Marshalltown in 1852 when Marshall sold all his land except for a small corner parcel to Jameson & Cobb. At first there were only two stores in Calhoun: Jameson & Cobb's store on New Market Street (now east side of I-285) and John Marshall's store on Old Market Street (west side of I-285). When both stores closed around 1870 they were replaced by Fenton & Phelps' grocery store which operated until 1905. During World War II munitions plants were located at nearby Bulls Ferry Dam and Peachtree Mountain Arsenal; these facilities produced aircraft parts for use by American military forces during the war. After the war ended production ceased at those plants but continued at other mills until 1984 when all mills closed down except for one which continues operating as an antique mall known as Mills Mall today.
