In 1861-1862, Calhoun served as an officer in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. After the war ended, he returned to Savannah and resumed his career as a lawyer. In 1865, he was elected to represent Georgia at the United Nations for two terms. He retired from practicing law in 1870 and died in 1880."
