Buford, Georgia is a small city in the southeast corner of Georgia. It is located about 30 miles east of Atlanta and 20 miles west of Savannah. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. The Buford Chamber of Commerce lists four businesses that are members- Dow Corning, JBL Audio, Lululemon Athletica, and Panera Bread- all within five blocks of one another. This proximity to major retailers has led to the city being called "the shopping center for the south." The first scopes were developed in Buford by three men who worked for General Samuel Johnson during the American Revolution. They built a telescope on an old plantation in 1795 and used it to watch events in Boston. After America's independence was declared, many citizens traveled to Boston to observe the warring nations and their political machinations. One such individual was Captain John Smith who travelled to see what equipment was available in Boston before he arrived there as part of his reconnaissance mission for George Washington. When he didn't find any scopes worthy of his attention (or when he realized they may have been destroyed), he set out on foot with a pair of binoculars to explore different parts of town looking for one. He eventually found a shop run by Nicholas-Jacques Conte which sold telescopes made by Jameson & Sons- oneof England's leading optics manufacturers at that time. Captain Smith bought two new Jameson telescopes and returned home with them on December 12th, 1795 just days after America's independence announcement! thereafter began what would be an intense competition among English manufacturer's vyingfor customers throughout North America; this competition would lead directlyto American revolution 2nd largest export market ever!Jameson & Sons manufactured over 150 telescopes between 1795 - 1821 making themoneof america’s most successful telescope builders! In 1838 Elisha Creyton founded Creyton & Kilburn Glass Workshops(later known as Hughes Optics)in order to produce optics for astronomical use; this companywouldproduceover 200 scopes until its closure in 1954 . In 1819 Captain John Capps established a fur trading post at present day Buford Creek near present day Lake Lanier within what is today Mount Pleasant Township. In 1828 Ulysses S. Grant visited Gadsden while he was campaigning for president and stopped at Dickey's Cabin to drink some whiskey before continuing his journey home. Upon his return to America he ordered his personal doctor to check out Dickey's cabin and found that he had tuberculosis which caused him great pain and suffering until it ended his life in 1865 at age 53 years old.
